Starbucks Expands Sales of Shade Grown Coffee
CI and Starbucks Coffee Company are once again demonstrating that coffee can be a vital tool in the fight to protect the last remaining cloud forest in southern Mexico.

This year, Starbucks purchased its largest supply to date of Shade Grown Mexico coffee with plans to have this environmentally friendly coffee available all year. Shade coffee is grown by farmers in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve region of Mexico with support from Starbucks and CI's Conservation Coffee program.

Farmers living and working in the region have received real benefits from participating in the program. These include a 65 percent increase in the price paid for shade grown coffee over local prices, a 50 percent growth in international coffee sales over last year and a 220 percent increase since 1998 in acres currently under the management of these farmers. This success has led to a commitment by Starbucks and CI to launch other Conservation Coffee programs in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

"Starbucks and CI have made a difference in farmers' lives with the sale of this exceptional coffee," says Orin Smith, Starbucks president and CEO. "By paying a premium price for this shade-grown coffee, Starbucks improves the well-being of coffee farmers and encourages them to preserve the forest environment."
