DAY 1: Activities

Geography Anyone?
Level: General
The objective of this activity is to gain map skills and understand that equatorial countries have a high level of

biodiversity. This activity can be done individually or in groups of two, depending on the resources available.

  1. Using a world map, determine the latitude and longitude for the Pantanal in Brazil.
  2. Is the entire Pantanal contained in Brazil? If not, in what other countries is it located?
  3. What is the population of Brazil? (see Maps and Facts).

Find a country with a comparable population to Brazil - how big is that country (in terms of land size) compared with Brazil?

  4. What is the population of the United States? Compare the population and land size of the United States with Brazil. Which country has a higher

    population density?

  5. Do you think that other countries with the same longitude as Brazil have a high or low level of biodiversity? What about with the same latitudes?
  6. Does there appear to be a relationship between biodiversity and proximity to the equator?
  7. Do you think the Pantanal is a biologically diverse area?
  8. How could the location of the Pantanal help or hurt efforts to protect its wildlife and preserve its remaining undeveloped areas?
  9. Return to Day 1 Dispatch
